St Chad's Feast and Triples Eisteddfod - 4th and 5th of December 2004

John McDonald left a valuable legacy to Birmingham ringing - the love of triples principles. It started with many attempts to ring H Law James' 7 part of Stedman Triples during the seventies. The composition was probably originally produced for academic reasons and has still only been rung on a handful of occasions. Over the years, and at the hands of many conductors, this has undoubtedly become Birmingham's most 'lost' peal composition!

Eventual success was followed by further interesting and historical compositions, as well as peals in principles other than Stedman notably Scientific, Carters and Martin's. Many Birmingham ringers, past and present, took part. All were given a thorough grounding in the intricacies of ringing these principles, as well as countless opportunities to spend long pleasurable evenings in John's unique company, over a few pints.

It had long been John's intention to bring together like-minded ringers from across the country to enjoy a triples weekend and each other's company. He described his vision as a 'kind of eisteddfod'. Before John died earlier this year, plans had been discussed with him for this event to be combined with the annual St Chad's Feast during December 2004.

The Saturday will be filled with peals of Stedman Triples rung across Birmingham, in both tower and hand, demonstrating the historical developments in composition. The headquarters for the day will be the Bull pub, near to St Chad's Cathedral. The feast will be held during the evening. Should time permit a talk will be included on the history of Stedman.

On Sunday, following morning service at St Chad's Cathedral, each band will be invited to ring a touch of a triples principle of their choice. The band producing the best piece of ringing judged will be made an award. The ringing will be 'judged' from an aesthetic point of view by the other bands. The Bull pub will be available for refreshments throughout. An award will also be made to the band ringing the best peal, judged by a roving judge.

Bands from ASCY, York, Towcester and Worcestershire have already indicated they will be taking part, in addition to John Pladdys's peal band and a Birmingham band. Any other bands interested in taking part, or ringers wishing to book a place at the feast, should contact Richard Grimmett at richard@grimmett.org. The feast is likely to be heavily subscribed so early booking is advised. Richard will also help with hotel bookings should this be required.
